IB or A-Level – what to choose?
Parents wishing for their child will have degree higher education in the UK or another English-speaking country, often have a task of what the education system to choose – International Baccalaureate (International Baccalaureate – IB) or traditional British (A-Level).
In recent years the International Baccalaureate has evolved from consideration as niche qualifications suitable for a small group of students, in the well understood and well perceived knowledge system that provides direct admission to most universities in the world.
Universities themselves are better informed about the IB features and quality of training of its graduates.
One of the main reasons for changing the point of view of IB is that it is increasingly seen as a harmonious design, develop the skills necessary for success at university and provides good preparation for higher education.
In order to get the coveted diploma IB, all high school students must write an extended essay of 4000 words of the selected topic. This kind of independent research that demonstrates the student’s ability to think freely on a given issue.
For the essay form relationships as a research project, which should be written in the same style as the students studying at the university undergraduate programs. Students have directing their scientific director, but this is largely independent study and a good preparation for the research work, which in varying degrees, engaged in all high school students.
Even those who are going to study at the University of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, will still have to write an essay, therefore, learning at the school, it is important to develop a discursive arguments.
A-Level Graduates of the program also have the ability to write creative essays as part of the “Expanded qualifying project» (Extended Project Qualification – EPQ). However EPQ is a free choice of the student, and in the IB system it is mandatory that a university point of view is a great advantage.
IB students are also required to take a course on critical thinking, which is called the Ttheory of Knowledge. It allows you to develop the mental skills that are necessary for their studies at the university.
Training IB plan is structured so that the students did not significantly narrow their opportunities for learning in universities, when they make their choice of subjects in 16 years.
The diploma program last classes IB offers not only deep, on as broad knowledge and the fact that students have to take a set of objects, including the natural sciences and the humanities, mathematics, foreign language and English, means that there are a large number of special combinations for which they can study at the university.
Each of the six IB subjects, which shall be final, evaluated seven points. Three awarded for an extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, and a program of service to the community, giving a maximum total of 45 points.
Recognizing the value of IB education many of the leading UK universities (except Oxbridge) have lowered the requirements on the number of points that you need to dial IB Diploma graduates. For example, the Royal College London (King’s College London) has lowered the required number of points from 39 to 35, and the University of Birmingham – from 35-36 to 32.
The reason is that the method of assessment in the finals of the A-Level course has recently undergone a revision with the addition of a higher level of A *, and everything remains the same in IB.
King’s College London is not the only university that has a positive attitude to the IB. Poll admissions, found that 18% of its members consider that IB graduates are prepared for university programs better, compared to 8%, which are higher than estimated A-Level. Just over half – 51% – compared to their equally.
Translated points IB scores on evaluation system A-Level on a scale of Unified Service enrollment in universities and colleges (UCAS), the 35 IB points is three AAA, and 40 – A * A * A *. Oxbridge require 38-42 score on the IB.
When comparing IB and A-Levels in several categories IB was isolated best way. There were marked encourage independent learning, the development of educational skills and raise an inquisitive mind and introspection. A-level rated above only the parameter-depth study of subjects.
By IB well include not only the UK universities. The combination of skills that require a diploma program, making it popular among admissions officers at universities around the world. First of all, this applies to the US, where first-year students to select a specialty usually study a range of subjects.
IB’s popularity in the UK is increasing as we move towards the university offers undergraduate courses on a broader basis in the spirit of the American model of higher education. Many British universities, including the Royal College London, Exeter, Bristol and Warwick universities have begun to offer undergraduate degrees in liberal arts. Some universities, including the University of Birmingham, University of Surrey and University College London have introduced undergraduate programs that combine the study of the liberal arts (humanities) and the Natural Sciences.
There is also a good preparation of graduates of IB programs. Research conducted at the University of Leeds show that students with previous experience of the IB, most often produced from university with degrees of the first and second grades than students who have gone through other secondary education system, including A-level. In addition, they are less likely to drop out, are not studied up to the end.
Summarizing, we can say that IB provides a broad education and does not require additional public work from their students, because it is included in the curriculum. A-level gives a more narrowly focused education, and students need to contribute to society (as a prerequisite for admission to top universities) outside the scope of the curriculum.
In any case, to become a student of the best universities in the world, you must strive to excellent learn and to be active, because points does not determine the evaluation of solutions opening commission.
