How to write an essay
At school or college you can get the assignment to write an essay. Time in class will be limited, therefore, to complete the work on time, follow the advice on how to maximize your time and do the work on the text effectively.
Prepare for composing
1. Think about what topic they can give you. If the teacher take special attention to a particular theme, maybe he thinks this is important. This topic is likely to be the subject of the work.
2. Characteristics of effective compositions. Good work – is:
– Focus. Essay is written strictly in accordance with the theme, and it uses clear arguments. The content does not deviate from the given themes.
– Organization. A good writer doesn’t write anything that comes to mind. He ponders the structure and order in which it will put forward ideas before starting work on the text.
– Support. In a good essay outlines ideas that are supported by facts or statements in the text, the author analyzes.
– Clarity. Good essay is written with all the rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
3. Take a pencil. Ask the teacher if allowed to use rough copy to jot down your thoughts.
1. Analyze clues. Write down exactly what your teacher asks you to do.
Rewrite the tips if they are written on the board.
Underline key words. Find the word “explain”, “define”, “analyze” or “characterize”.
Break tips on components. If you need to “define” something, and then “analyze” it, then write a paragraph that gives the definition of what is required, then the second paragraph, analyzing what you have defined.
2. List your ideas. Write down short phrases or keywords are the facts that you remember. These facts would support the arguments and allegations, on which to build your work.
3. Theses statements describe the entire composition. These statements should define your point of view, that you disclose in their work.
Avoid statements about you personally. For example, do not write, “I think” or “today i give my opinion …”
Allegations must be specific. Describing your point of view, an explanation should be given in a neutral style, when. Write “Ronald Reagan, the United States will always be remembered as a great president because he managed to finish the Cold War.” Avoid phrases such as “Everyone thinks Ronald Reagan the best president in history.”
Each paragraph of your essays must be associated with a succinct statement.
4. Divide your facts drawn 2-4 group.
Highlight the distinctive features of the items in each group. These similarities will become semantic accents in the content of paragraphs.
Eliminate ideas that do not support your main arguments. Using advanced ideas will make your work vague.
Place each group in order of importance. In the first paragraph, state the less important arguments, and in the final paragraph – the most convincing.
5. Key expressions describe the content of each paragraph.
In each paragraph, write a sentence or two to prove your point. Proposals must be associated with a key statement of the paragraph.
Express supporting argument. Then explain why this argument is significant. If you can not explain its importance, do not mention it at all.
6. Write a sentence for each paragraph. Restate the argument that you have used in a key statement.
7. Create a short introduction to the work. For example, use facts, quotes or statistics relating to the key statement. The key sentence is the last sentence in your entry.
8. Write the conclusion. The conclusion must also conform to the key statement, briefly summarizing the arguments made by you, and end with the approval of the final point of your composition.
Check your work
1. Start with correct grammar, punctuation and spelling errors.
2. Then fix logic errors.
3. Then smoothen the transitions between paragraphs and in paragraphs to one idea flows smoothly to another.
Count your time. For example, try to finish writing an essay so that there 5-10 minutes left to check.
If the teacher allows, use a dictionary or reference book.
