Good writing style
Keep your statements in the theses focused on the topic
You must embrace the only question in exceptional detail that your allegations were strongly justified by the content of document. Consider the following examples:
While both sides in the war of the North and the South fought over slavery, Northerners were based on the principles of morality, and Southerners – on the preservation of the existing order.
The main problem of the American steel industry – the lack of funds for renovation of obsolete production facilities and equipment.
Hemingway stories helped to create a new style of prose, introducing enhanced dialogue, shorter sentences and strong Anglo-Saxon expression.
Start with a question
Despite how complex is your theme, almost all abstracts can be constructed as if you answered their questions. For example, suppose that you learn in school, and you have been given write a report explaining the benefits of using computers in the classroom for teaching. Just convert the set before you the task in question, “What are the benefits of using computers in the classroom” and specify the proposal, which will be your thesis: “The potential benefits of the use of computers in the classroom …”
Stick to a rigid structure
Knowledge of the basic techniques will not only help you in writing a thesis acceptable length, but will also help you organize your statements as a whole.
Your abstract must contain two parts:
– clearly defined topic
– summary of what you will say
– another technique is the use of constructing theses ready-made formulas that clearly supports the focus on the idea:
[someone] [doing something], because [reason (-s)]
since [the reason (-s)], [someone] [doing something]
although [contrary evidence], [reason (-s)] say that [someone] [doing something]
The latest example involves an opposing argument, which complicates sentence, but further strengthens the claim. In fact, you should always know the possible arguments of the opposition to your theses. This allows you to clarify your theses, as well as to refute the opposition.
Write down your thesis
Rough copy of your theses will help you get back on track and have a good think about them, to develop your ideas further and clarify the content of document. You can check the consistency, clarity and conciseness of your theses.
There are two approaches to writing theses. Some believe that we should not start writing a document, without having finished and recorded theses, even if you have little to correct them afterwards. Another approach says that you can not know where you can start a train of thought, is not write the document, so it is not necessary to write theses, not knowing what they have to say. Do as you wish.
Improvement of theses
Analyze your theses, when you decide that they are ready in a final or a working version
The objective is to identify possible errors that can weaken theses. To better understand what to do and what to avoid, consider the following:
Never write theses in the form of a question. Appointment of theses – to answer questions, not ask them.
Theses – this is not a list. If you are trying to give an answer to a specific question, you should not use too many indicators for this that will get you out of focus. Be brief and compressed.
Never mention another topic that you are not willing to discuss the document.
Do not write in the first person. Statements like: “I’ll show you …”; very much like a scientist.
Do not be a militant. The purpose of your document is to convince people of the correctness of your position, not alienate them. The best way to do this – to get them to listen to you. Try to stay unbiased, trying to find a common basis in different views.
Theses must be unshakeable absolute
Think of them as “working thesis option,” which can be changed. As you write your document, you may find that you have changed your mind or some have deviated from the original topic. So, try to constantly re-read the theses, comparing them with the text of your document, and making the necessary corrections so that they do not contradict each other. When the document is ready, once again return to the theses to check, do not require them to once again reconsider.
Think of your theses as a case which protects the lawyer. Theses should explain the matter, which you are going to do and how you do it. You can also think of the thesis as a contract. Disclosures to the unprepared reader new ideas can push him away.
Effectively built theses keep control over all stated allegations. They determine what you should not say. If the statement does not support your thesis, lower it, or change the thesis itself.
